Governance

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is pleased to announce that Dan Fibiger, Vice President of Global Sustainability at Gap Inc., has joined the BCI Council. He will serve on the council until June 2028.

Dan brings extensive experience in sustainability leadership, responsible sourcing, and global supply chain governance. In his role at Gap Inc., he oversees global sustainability initiatives and programmes. He formerly served as President of Gap Foundation and has previously held numerous advisory and governance roles, including the Global Labor Institute at Cornell University, the Social and Labor Convergence Program, Nirapon, and RISE.

Reflecting on his appointment, Dan said:

“Gap Inc.’s decade-long relationship with the Better Cotton Initiative has shown what collaboration can achieve. I look forward to helping shape the next chapter — one defined by stronger traceability and more resilient cotton communities.”

Gap Inc. has been a committed BCI member since 2016, with Better Cotton accounting for nearly all of the cotton purchased under their sustainable sourcing strategy last year. One of BCI’s largest US-based Retailer and Brand Members, Gap Inc. has also been instrumental in driving forward key innovations including the development of our traceability solution through its ongoing involvement on the BCI Traceability Panel.

BCI’s CEO, Nick Weatherill said:

“We are delighted and honoured to have Dan join the council. Gap Inc.’s long-standing engagement with BCI, their leadership on traceability and their commitment to sustainability makes them an invaluable partner to help shape the next phase of BCI’s work in support of a truly sustainable cotton sector. Dan’s experience and his commitment to collaboration will be a real asset to the council.”

BCI Council Co-Chair, Tamar Hoek added:

“As Co-Chair, I am delighted to welcome Dan Fibiger to the Council. Gap Inc. is one of the largest specialty apparel companies in the U.S. and a significant buyer of BCI Cotton, which gives its voice tremendous influence. This scale of commitment, particularly on traceability innovation, is essential to the vision and ambition of the Better Cotton Initiative movement. With corporate leadership alongside civil society and cotton producers in the Council, we are laser-focused on translating that vision into measurable, positive impact for cotton farmers and workers around the world, ensuring better livelihoods, robust human rights protections, and true environmental resilience at farm level.”

Most recently, the council also welcomed Ramisetty Murali of Modern Architects of Rural India (MARI), further strengthening the group’s collective expertise, its knowledge of cotton farming contexts and its multi-stakeholder representation across the cotton sector.

The BCI Council plays a central role in setting the organisation’s strategy and presiding over its governance. Formed through a biennial election and nomination process, the council brings together representatives from across the cotton sector—including retailers, brands, suppliers, manufacturers, producers, and civil society.

By combining these diverse insights, the BCI Council helps ensure the Better Cotton Initiative continues to fulfil its mission: supporting cotton communities to survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment.
