Welcome to the Better Cotton Platform

We are pleased that your company would like to participate in the Better Cotton Chain of Custody by sourcing and supplying cotton-containing products as Better Cotton. More than 120 well-known retailers and brands are BCI Members. The majority are already sourcing cotton-containing products as Better Cotton to meet their public targets for more sustainable cotton, so your investment in a Better Cotton Platform account is worthwhile.

This offer allows suppliers and manufacturers not involved in trading raw cotton and/or yarn spinning to access the Better Cotton Platform (BCP). It gives your company a way to participate electronically in the Better Cotton Chain of Custody by allowing you to generate and manage obligatory documentation for verifying sourcing of cotton-containing products as Better Cotton. BCP access gives you the opportunity to source and sell cotton-containing products as Better Cotton and helps you build your clientele for Better Cotton.

As of 1 January 2020, all suppliers and manufacturers directly or indirectly involved in Better Cotton sourcing for BCI Retailer and Brand Members must have an account on the Better Cotton Platform.

What is the Better Cotton Platform?

The Better Cotton Platform (BCP) belongs to the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and is used as a documentation and verification tool by BCI and BCI stakeholders involved in sourcing cotton as Better Cotton. The Better Cotton Chain of Custody Guidelines outline what types of entities are obligated to use the BCP. Access allows you to participate electronically in the Better Cotton Chain of Custody and facilitates:

  • Recording information about cotton-containing orders sourced as Better Cotton and managing the required documentation; and
  • Recording information about cotton-containing sales to customers as Better Cotton.

As of 1 January 2020, it will be compulsory for all the supply chain actors involved in fulfilling BCI orders for BCI Retailers and Brand Members to use the BCP.

As an example, a nominated fabric mills sourcing directly for a retailer or brand may pass BCCUs directly to a BCI Retailer and Brand Member, only via their BCP Account. Similarly, for end product manufacturers all their suppliers will be required to have a BCP Account to cover the entire chain. It must be noted that any retailer or brand wanting to source Better Cotton, must become a BCI Member.

This short video demonstrates how our system works.

Who uses the Better Cotton Platform?

All cotton supply chain actors – ginners, traders, spinners, fabric mills, garment end product manufacturers, sourcing agents and retailers – can have access to the BCP. Since its inauguration, in conjunction with the Better Cotton Chain of Custody Guidelines in 2013, cotton traders, spinners, and retailers and brands are obliged to be BCI Members and use the BCP. In 2020, all other actors in the supply chain wishing to source or fulfil orders as Better Cotton for BCI Retailer and Brands Members will be obliged to use the BCP. Please note that there are eligibility criteria to be able to access the BCP.

How much does access to the Better Cotton Platform cost?

One account for an established business or group of affiliated companies costs 500 € for a period of 12 months.

You will be asked automatically to renew your access to the BCP at the end of each 12-month period. Timely payment will ensure uninterrupted access to the system, that is, you do not pay on time, your BCP access will be blocked until payment is made.

If you are a new organisation to BCI applying for a BCP Access during the period 1 June to 30 September 2019, your first annual fee will be 400 €.

The reduced price does not apply to companies with a BCP Account that was active after 1 January 2019, even if it has since been closed.

Is there any training involved?

Yes. After you complete and purchase your online registration, you will be invited to join our online training platform.

You must successfully complete this online training before you will be given access to the BCP. The training explains how the BCP works and how to use it.

The training platform offers different courses for different types of supply chain actors. You will be asked to choose the one relevant to the type of business you conduct. For example, if you buy fabric and sell garments, you must complete the training tailored for this type of business activity.

Is this a BCI membership?

No, having BCP Access is not the same as being a member of the Better Cotton Initiative.

You may join BCI as a member at any time. We welcome your support in our efforts to drive the cotton sector toward a more sustainable future. With membership, you have full access to our member benefits, including multiple BCP Accounts. Find out more here.

What happens if I do not renew my Better Cotton Platform Access after one year?

If you do not renew, access to your account will be blocked and all BCCUs in your inventory will be forfeited. For full details please read carefully the Terms and Conditions.
