Global retail giant GAP, a brand of BCI Retailer and Brand Member GAP inc., reinforced their stance on their responsibility and pride in protecting communities and the environment, by sharing their new commitments last Friday, in advance of Earth Day 2017.
They plan to dramatically increase the use of more sustainable fibres and processes in apparel production practices within the next five years and also further build on existing goals on their water usage, GHG emissions, among others, as part of the ‘Gap for Good’ platform for more sustainable fashion.
On more sustainable fibres, Gap launched the new commitment to obtain 100% of its cotton from more sustainable sources by 2021. This includes Better Cotton, organic cotton, recycled cotton, and American-grown cotton.
Gap Inc. will continue to source Better Cotton to support these sustainability targets. Since joining the Better Cotton Initiative, they have sourced 5000 metric tonnes of Better Cotton lint, the equivalent of 7.4 million pairs of jeans worth of cotton.
Gaps commitment to more sustainable sourcing comes in the backdrop of increased effort and attention on the matter from other brands. BCI Retailer and Brand Members are setting their sights on doubling their 2016 performance this year to 1,000,000 metric tonnes sourced as Better Cotton lint.
