The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) — a global not-for-profit organisation — is the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world. In the 2018-19 cotton season, 2.3 million BCI Farmers received training on more sustainable farming practices and produced 5.6 million tonnes of Better Cotton – that equates to 22% of global cotton production.
BCI aims to transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity.
BCI exists to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future.
To achieve this mission, BCI works with a diverse range of stakeholders across the cotton sector, from field to store, to promote measurable and continuing improvements for the environment, farming communities and the economies of cotton-producing areas.
Our four specific goals:
- Reduce the environmental impact of cotton production
- Improve livelihoods and economic development in cotton producing areas
- Improve commitment to and flow of Better Cotton throughout supply chain
- Ensure the credibility and sustainability of the Better Cotton Initiative
