The Better Cotton System represents a holistic approach to sustainable cotton production. Each of the elements – from the Production Principles and Criteria to the Tools exchanging knowledge and best practice – work together to support the Better Cotton System.

- Production Principles and Criteria: global definition of Better Cotton
- Farmer Support: enabling mechanisms provided by experienced implementing partners (IPs), financially supported by public-private partnership funds
- Farm Assessment: regular (multi-level) measurement of results, encouraging farmers to continuously improve
- Supply Chain: connects supply with demand through an identifiable bale of 100% Better Cotton lint
- Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning: mechanisms to measure progress/change, in order to ensure that Better Cotton delivers the intended impact
- Tools: guidelines and learning forums to facilitate the exchange of best practices and knowledge
